    <content:encoded>
    What you say is very correct in my recent experience. I have suffered prolonged back problems for years and recently started going to a very good physio who has told me that the problems are caused by 1. Lack of core strength to support my lower back, and 2. Lack of glute activation.
Lack of activiation doing day to day movements, as well as exercising.
For whatever reason, my brain refuses to use the glute muscels, and instead recruits only the leg and back muscles to provide the movement. This puts a strain on my back, especially when coupled with the lack of core strength.
For people like me, it&#039;s actually very difficult to do exercises that invlove the glute muscles, as our brain constantly tries to cheat by using the worng muscle groups. So, the trick is to re-train your brain to use the glute muscles on a day to day basis automatically, without you having to consciuosly make them work (climbing stairs, standing up from a chair etc). To do this, I&#039;ve been told a method of standing up from a sitting position to ensure the glutes are used, and that through doing this, my brain should eventually start to use these muscles a lot more. Apparently, it takes a minimum of 2000 repititions over a prolonged period of time in order for your brain to start to be re-trained to use different muscles in this way. The sitting-standing exercise is simply to remember every time you stand up from a chair to push your knees outwards as you stand, as well as pushing your feet outwards (without actually moving them)and keep your back straight (don&#039;t use your arms or hands at all).
This should get the glutes doing all the work because you won&#039;t be able to move to the standing position if they don&#039;t. Eventualy, the brain should start to use the glutes automatically.

    Interesting commentary. Hopefully you start getting back into the mags -- namely ours. We&#039;re actually doing more and more on MMA and UFC, notably with profiles on the training of Gina Carano, Kimbo Slice, Brock Lesnar, Matt Serra and Matt Hughes. We have some online stuff coming in another week or so and look for a big UFC feature in the fall.

By the way, don&#039;t worry too much about missing some training. The study below says that the effects of training stay for quite a while even with no training:

    I would disagree with the manner in which she acted. I believe that one must be checked before sparring with others especially students.

If you had come into my dojo you would have practiced for about two or three months with us first. Then I would have sparred with you.

I would not have pressed the attack nor would I have just thumped you to see if you were an a%$h)(*.

I would have checked your kimi, ma-ai, control, and muscle breath control (Ibuki).

The reason is you deserve the benefit of the doubt and since you had a layoff of twelve years the two to three months would have allowed us time to get you back up to some semblance of proficiency.

    Nice blog! I came to it through Chris&#039;s
(conditioning research) blog. He commments on mine from time to time.

Inflammation from carbs.
It&#039;s true! From my own experience, when I first started with weights 6 years ago (age 34, played a lot of sports but never touched a weight) my body would ache beyond belief. As my joints and muscles got used to weight bearing loads, the soreness subsided. But then I started noticing soreness sporadically, not understanding why this would come on so strongly. I did a simliar experiment and realized it was the carbs. I&#039;ve been pretty much carb free for 3 years. I just turned 40 and I&#039;m in the best health I&#039;ve ever been.
Not sure if you&#039;ve read Art Devany&#039;s site. www.artdevany.com Lots of good stuff on inflammation.
